I managed to get out this afternoon and we now hear that the roadwork’s will finish today. They haven't been within half a mile of my road so why did they send out letters saying you were not allowed on the road at any time, end of Grumpy Lady Magpie.
Whilst out today I called in to capture Ebley Mill, which has a fantastic history. There has been a mill on this site since 1393 but it was a small waterwheel type just grinding corn. In the late 1700's early 1800's the water power was supplement by a steam engine, this is probably when the chimney was added.
By 1825 it changed hands and became a textile mill, before being taken over by the Marling Family. They became an important employer and sponsored many other important buildings throughout the valley, The Marling School for boys being one.
In 1870 the mill employed over 800 workers and more buildings were added. If you look closely at the foreground you can see that the canal runs along this side of the mill, giving a good method of transforming the cloth around the UK and particularly London.
It finally closed as a cloth mill and partly taken over as printers after the WW2, some buildings were demolished, but by 1990 it became the headquarters of our Stroud District Council who have brought it back to life. The whole building is impressive but none more than that chimney, glad I wasn't laying the bricks at the top.
Beautifully kept after all those years….they could build to last in those days.
Roadworks all over the place here too…they are building a bypass for Singleton & it’s mayhem. I never drive that way normally but had to today fir my appointment.
