Now why would you trap a chunk of stone in a cage, is it dangerous to life or perhaps it's to stop it from running away. There is a little bit of cruelty here as they have cut the grass all around the cage but left the stone to suffer from nettles and poison ivy etc.
Well yes I'm talking rubbish as usual, this is the bottom part of a Saxon Cross and dates from around 700 AD, that means is around 1400 years old. It was once carved with tiers of holy figures in squares on the cross.
It originally stood on a crossroad about half a mile down the road, before being moved here around 1820 to mark the boundary of the village of Bisley, hence it's known as The Bisley Cross.
It was recognised in 1928 and has since been restored; it is protected by the Gloucestershire County Council. Not very well is my observation.
Well Heather they might have had a bit of foresight & made the cage bigger with a gate for mowing! I expect in the summer you can’t see the cross for the weeds! Typical men in offices! The cross deserves more at that age!
