Thank you so much for your wonderful response to my photo on Tuesday! I really appreciate it. Since the herring run happens for such a short time each year, I decided to revisit it yesterday (posting late!).
I like this photo because it really shows the abundance of herring. All that turbulance in the water is actually hundreds and hundreds of fish. Every spring they migrate from Cape Cod Bay, up this creek. Along the way they must jump up a series of ladders to reach Mill Pond where they will lay their eggs. In the fall the young herring migrate back down the same creek to the ocean. It's a fairly perilous journey because the shores of the creek are lined with seagulls looking for an easy meal.
Love this shot, Laurie! I should take a ride over to our herring run soon to watch the run - always so interesting to see. Always feel sorry for the herring - they have to work so hard, and get picked off so easily!
Awesome shot again, Laurie. When I was there last there were only a few dozen herring and not really making much progress up the ladders. I wish I could go back now and see all the activity. Love your photos! Glad you went back.
