After a 680 day pregnancy African elephant Punda last night gave birth to the first African elephant to be born in the BeNeLux. It's a girl and the zoo named her Madiba, a reference to Nelson Mandela.
Because mother and calf are doing extremely well the zoo decided to stay open late today and allow visitors with a membership to have a first glimpse of the newborn. I left work early to visit and get some shots. In this photo from left to right, mother Punda, newborn Madiba and one of her older sisters.
Sweet baby. a 680 day pregnancy??? Ouch!! We have memberships to our San Diego Zoo and their Safari Park location , and when they have new babies at the Safari Park (20 minutes from our home) it's fun to o out and see them.
