Up Helly Aa Season by lifeat60degrees

Up Helly Aa Season

After a couple of years off due to Covid Shetland's Up Helly Aa season kicks off tonight with the Scalloway event. This is the galley head for this years procession but it will soon be no more as it is set alight after the procession. I always say I'm a fair weather Up Helly Aa watcher but although the weather is set fair tonight. I'll be giving it a miss again this year. Traditionally Shetland's flu season starts at the end of January once the big Lerwick festival has taken place and the local health board has issued warnings asking everyone to take what precautions they can to stop the spread. Some hope I'm afraid.
Sorry you will miss out. The flu is also quite rampant here at the moment

Interesting narrative. I had to look up Up Helly Aa because I suffer from terminal curiosity. For others, like me, who don'tknow what it is, here's a link:

Sounds wonderful

Ah, Up Helly Aa. A fabulous festival, but I can understand why warnings have been issued. Covid issues are not over yet, sadly. :-(
