You've got an Osage Orange there. Full name is a bois d'arc (Americanized to "bodark"). We always called the fruit horse apples, but they have many different nicknames. The trees lined some of the alleys when I was younger, and we would ride our bikes down the alleys and try to hit the horse apples. The best use I've heard of for the fruit is to cut it open and put it in a place where there are roaches. It will repel them. Nice POV in your photo. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maclura_pomifera
