These birds are known for their cooing sound and it is believed their name came from their call, it is drawn out and a bit of a lament. They are seed eaters, storing the seeds in their "crop", a hollow space in their esophagus, for digestion later. They are quite fast, having been clocked at 55 mph! They can raise up to six broods a year, and they mate for life. They are the most hunted species in North America, their population isn't affected by hunting because they have so many young every year. This sweet fellow was in the chef's garden in Austin, Texas this weekend. He's probably figured out it's a safe place to be, all year!
Wonderful focus and details. Love the blue around the eye and beak. Very unusual. Great composition for this image. I hope the chef's garden is a safe place for the pigeon.
Thank you so much for your comments and favs, you put this fellow on the pp and tp! @littleconnie He is very safe staying in the chef's garden, he was standing on the fence around the chicken coop, the chickens may very well end up on the menu but I didn't see dove on the menu! Smile.
