In 1881 my paternal grandfather rode a train to a banker’s convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While there he purchased this rocker and other pieces of furniture for my grandmother. They lived in Comanche, Texas, and she loved to talk about meeting the train when her husband came home and his surprise gifts for her.
Aaw ! such a beautiful ,romantic story ! and such a beautiful period rocking chair - -- there was true style in those days, and it looks to be a comfortable chair as well !
@milaniet Twenty years ago I had it refinished and recovered. It has been a sweet part of my life, all my life, and I just wanted it to look it’s best.
Wow now that is some story chair and capture Lou Ann would Comanche Texas in 1881 still have been considered as part of the Wild West or was it to far East:)
@pcoulson Comanche was incorporated in 1858, it had a military road called the “corn trail” through it. A road that supplied the forts and encouraged settlements. It was definitely the Wild West, a famous gunslinger killed a sheriff’s deputy in 1874, just 7 years before my 21 year old grandfather took the train to Philadelphia. The courthouse was a log cabin for many years.
