waterworld -- fashion shoot

My get-pushed challenge this week was from @louienumber4 - thrift shop creativity. Challenge rules and discussion are at http://365project.org/discuss/themes-competitions/15670/get-pushed-2013-week-1-monday-jan-7-to-sunday-jan-13.
This shot is the result of an incredibly serendipidous afternoon!

At lunchtime I drove to the nearest thrift shop, having first asked a colleague if she would let me take a photo of her in a dress after work?
"you will? perfect!
...in the shop they have a 'damaged' italian design bead and duchesse satin wedding dress on sale for $40 - what a bargain!! , and a $3 necklace...
yes I'll take them! perfect.... back to work..
"Oh, and, ummm, Caz, would you have time to drop down to Lake Burley Griffin straight after work? the location would be perfect...
yes? great!....
"Oh, and, ummm, Caz, would you mind getting just a little wet? I have an idea...

How cool are the people I work with!!! We spent 2 hours IN the lake - for this shot I am in the lake - seated in the slime & up to my chest in water, still fully clothed - wearing my work clothes.
We used the car windscreen heat-shield as a makeshift reflector, (thanks Richard for the idea, Bec for assisting) and Caz is resting her head on a lunchbox we nabbed from the lunchroom (thanks Claire).

Oh, and I dropped the dress in the bath & then the washing machine, & the do not wash, do not dryclean or spot clean dress looks like new!! Now all I have to do is find a place to store it!

An alternate shot is at http://365project.org/ltodd/extras/2013-01-10

I know this makes a terrible thumbnail, but it looks snazzy enlarged!
LOVE and love the story behind it. Way to make it happen :)

January 12th, 2013
Turned out fabulous just like your colleagues . FAV
January 12th, 2013
@sunshinephoto5 @northy I know! my colleagues are such good sports, everyone looks out for each other when anyone needs a hand. I have given copies of all 500 (!! awsome) shots to her, and a large print & I will make a slide show for her too.

@northy I had to hunt for the right tag, and I think I found 19 shots by people using 'get-pushed-25' that might need their tags edited?
January 12th, 2013
@ltodd yeah... someone else mentioned that... sorry 'bout the confusion... the numbers had been really confusing me espec when we were doing the street photog challenge... that seems to have died out rather so i will apologize to all and revert...
January 12th, 2013
What a great idea! Cool that the dress cleaned up to
January 12th, 2013
As always Lyn you certainly put a lot of time, thought and effort into this photo and the results have paid off!

Fabulous photo Lyn.
January 12th, 2013
@dmdfday thanks, I think my mind 'has a mind of it's own' sometimes!!

@nicolecampbell thanks Nicole, you know It would be even more fun if you still worked in our office! :))

January 12th, 2013
@ltodd - yest but there is no way on earth I would be doing that for you! :) Now if it was something to do with food, that would be a different story.
January 12th, 2013
@nicolecampbell ROFLOL........ perhaps chocolate sauce poured over you then??
January 12th, 2013
@ltodd - no you are talking and I am sure Rob would enjoy that too :)
January 12th, 2013
Cool
January 12th, 2013
Great shot, and I love the back story. You have some great co-workers. I like Caz's smile; she must have been cracking up watching you up to your neck in mud.
January 12th, 2013
Lyn, I don't even have the right words for just how incredibly spectacular this is!!!! Creative! Original! Fantastic! Fav'd!!!!!!!!
January 12th, 2013
Excellent setting and intelligent pov. I love the swirling reflexes.
January 12th, 2013
truly awesome shot, Fav
January 12th, 2013
Lyn
Good grief, Lyn, fav just for the cost, the effort and the SLIME! Not to mention the photo itself is sublime, my friend!
January 12th, 2013
Massive effort for a great result. Well done to Team Lyn!! Fav!!
January 12th, 2013
@lyno thanks Lyn :) I did consider the cost beore I went to the thrift shop. I thought that as it costs $20 to see a 90 minute movie, and in the last 18 months I have had soo much enjoyment, and learnt so much from participating in my 365 project, it was a small price to pay. I thoroughly enjoyed the 2 hours shooting, .....the slime.... I could have done without! :))
January 12th, 2013
What great sports! You all rock! I hope you print this out nice and big for her! :-)
January 12th, 2013
wow great idea and capture :)
January 12th, 2013
Lovely shot and well done for getting such a willing model!
January 12th, 2013
Sounds like you had great fun. It reminds me of the classic painting of Ophelia except that your model's smile creates a very different mood.
January 12th, 2013
I AM INSPIRED!!! ... Amazing result and brilliant dedication :-D ... PS: Count as a body skin treatment - you got much more than your money's worth in return, and you can probably sell the dress back to the thriftshop if you don't want to keep it.
January 12th, 2013
OMG Lyn - This is amazing work! You are so creative and dedicated to pushing yourself. Spectacular enlarged. This reminds me of a fashion advertisement.
January 12th, 2013
What a great few hours! You took your challenge seriously! I'm fav'ing both! Fantastic!
January 12th, 2013
Great shot. Love it. You really went for it on this and it paid off.
January 12th, 2013
wow...amazing!!!
January 12th, 2013
Brilliant Lyn. Worth all the effort.
January 12th, 2013
Fantastic, Lyn. This gets two favs, you'll have to pass the second unofficial one on to Caz for devotion to duty. :-)
January 12th, 2013
@automaticslim I certainly will - it would not have been possible without her help!
January 12th, 2013
Fantastic work Lyn!
January 12th, 2013
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! You have some truly beautiful shots in your album!
January 12th, 2013
Awesome! Fav!
January 12th, 2013
@momsta @exposure4u thank you ladies, I really enjoyed this shoot, luckily it was still over 30 degrees while we were in the water. Not sure I would have attempted it in winter! :)
January 12th, 2013
Can I fav this, like, five times?!
January 13th, 2013
You are amazing - totally getting down and dirty for your challenge. And you have a wonderful colleague! Hope you bought her a drink, or at least a hair dryer. LoL ;)
January 13th, 2013
Wow! You were working it on this one! Great job! Fav! And yes, I have learned that sometimes we can get away with washing and/or drying clothes they say not to. Hope you can use the dress again! You should do a series with it!
January 13th, 2013
@louienumber4 oops - I forgot to tag you yesterday! Thankyou for this opportunity - I would never have attempted this without the 'push'! I had such fun, and learnt a lot about 'fashion shooting' outside - so much more complicated than shooting a still life- where everything can be controlled!
January 13th, 2013
@espyetta thanks Mary Beth - that sounds a seriously interesting idea - I learnt a lot with this shoot - and there are dozens of different ideas we tried - some didn't exactly work out, but with a slight tweak they would. The dress really is really beautiful. Do you remember Nat Stauart Perks red dress series ? - that dress travelled around Australia & it was great to see the same object portrayed so differently.
January 13th, 2013
@ltodd I don't think I saw the red dress series, but I DID see a video someone posted on the discussion boards on here about a girl who took this black dress and wore it 365 different ways, taking a photo each day...then made a video of it. It was so cool!
January 13th, 2013
@ltodd What is Nat Stuart's tag so I can find the Red dress series?
January 13th, 2013
January 13th, 2013
Very creative! Be very careful though when photographing brides in there gowns in water.. not too long ago one drowned. Got pulled over in a current and the weight of her dress kept her underwater and they found her down stream. Not alive. Very sad deal.
January 13th, 2013
So dreamy and pretty. Lovely shot.
January 13th, 2013
@shirljess thanks Shirley. I was aware of that terible incident and I was always alert. The risk in this 6 inches of water was more from the algae & bugs in the water which is why I didn't want Caz to put her ear under the water & we used the lunchbox as a pillow. :)
January 13th, 2013
She looks amazing! What a beautiful shot! Did she see the final piece and what did she think? So romantic and perfect!
January 13th, 2013
This is the first chance I've had to view this on my computer... saw it on my phone the other day... but wanted to see it here... GO YOU! This is awesome!! Love your reflector (I have some of those aluminium baking trays which make great ones inside the house lol) and your awesome workmate! Fav :)
January 13th, 2013

January 13th, 2013
This is incredible on so many levels...finding a wedding dress for that price!! The creativity, the help from your colleagues and the overall finished shot with those gorgeous reflections. Great work. Fav xx
January 14th, 2013
@psychographer thanks Lisa, I was lucky 'all the planets were aligned' for me that afternoon, and even the weather and the sunlight were delightful too. Then there are 'those days' when nothing gels!!
January 15th, 2013
Haha! You work with some amazing people & have a very interesting time, this is a great shot, love the rippled reflection :)

January 19th, 2013
Fav. Best of all. Even makes me think of Arthurian legend but modernized/stylized by Bolshoi state theatre
January 19th, 2013
Great job! Awesome take on the thrift challenge.
January 20th, 2013
Lyn, this is just so clever. Looks amazing. You are very talented.
January 20th, 2013
Hi Lyn, we've been paired up in this weeks (21-27th Jan) Get Pushed Challenge. You are an amazing photographer and I've really enjoyed going through your photo's. You have presented me with a challenge to find something you haven't already done. I hope you will have some fun with my challenge.
I'd like you to take a panoramic shot and turn it into a "Little Planet". The shot can be of anything you like. Here is a link to a basic guideline on how to create one of these. I have it on good authority that this one is the most straight forward and easy to follow if you're using Photoshop:
http://www.photoble.com/photoshop-tutorials/5-easy-steps-to-create-a-mini-panorama-planet-in-photoshop
Hope you have fun with it.
January 20th, 2013
@evahenriette thanks so much for your kind words, & that sounds a superb challenge EvaHenriette! I am behind (quite badly) with some 365 challenge administration tonight, so it may be 12 hours or so before I get a chance to get to set your challenge. I hope that is OK.
January 20th, 2013
Does look much better in large. You really got that light well sorted. Great effort Lyn .
January 21st, 2013
Great story and such a beautiful capture. Well done.
