camera settings challenge 21

As the name suggests, the CSC challenge is aimed at exploring camera settings. http://365project.org/discuss/themes-competitions/16431/camera-settings-challenge-21
Most cameras can be set to take monochrome images, but refining the settings can produce quite different type of images.
I normally shoot RAW and convert to monochrome in LR by choice, but this was a nice experiment to learn exactly where the settings were on my camera, and to predict the strength of the in-camera effect.

If you compare the lower two figures in each shot for example, you can see how the use of the red filter adjustment can add depth and accentuate detail in the image by selectively acting on different coloured clothing. A blue filter (as compared to a blue tone) would have had quite a different effect.
Cool collage.

I like that you added the color image also. Nice collage, can I ask how you made it. I am still learning about making collages.

@morrisphotos thanks Terri - I think the colour image really helps show the effect of the red filter. I opened the colour image and expanded the canvas size to 3 x as wide and 2 x deep. I use PSP, but any editing program that uses layers can work by opening each other image & then copying & pasting onto a new layer. I took nearly a year to work out how to do it this way! LOL !! I think Picassa & Picmonkey can make collages in an easy way, & there are other free collage software you can download from the internet, or upload each of the images to online collage services. What editing software do you have?

@ltodd I have CS5 and LR. I got my collage done but I always feel like I struggle doing them. I tried Picassa but they did not have very many choices of styles. What do you mean by PSP. I guess this is something that I just need to practice more.

@morrisphotos PSP is Corel's Paint Shop Pro which I find a little more user friendly than the CS3 I have. LR collage is easiest way I have found to generate a collage by far - print-to-file & pronto it's sorted. use ctrl to move the image around in the collage place holder, but 'crop' to 'size.' I downloaded a few free LR templates for collages & then after a while I set up my own templates, which is quite easy once you understand the print function set up.

look at http://halinav.com/lightroom/2011/07/20-collage-templates-free/ & importing is pretty easy, but follow the instructions - print templates are different to import than pre-sets. I *think* I used LR3 template in LR4 without any problem.

@morrisphotos oh...the 'frames' you see are just the inside part of the picture I photographed and then I aligned the 6 images from their different layers.

@ltodd Thanks for the help Lyn. I will go get the templates for LR.

Nicely done and commented, Lyn - I did this one, too, without any bright colors in my source shot. Thanks for the ideas of the collage templates in LR. . .hadn't tried that!

Nice. I like the high contrast the best!
