Today I learned a new thing (and a word) - a nictitating membrane which is something like a third eyelid some animals have and if you look closely you can see it in the hen's eye (I also accidentally took a photo where the membrane covers the whole eye but it looked pretty scary :D). The membrane is transparent and protects and moistens the eye.
