"Old Mac" digging for happiness
Madge and George Lang 1956
From the city of Johannesburg
comes a reminder of South Africa's mining legacy, a treasure on which our nation was built.
"Old Mac" is a 2.1 meter bronze statue of a prospector pausing over his shovel to reflect on the fruits of his labour. He has travelled from the Rand mines in Johannesburg to Dorp street in Stellenbosch, to oversee the work of Project Isizwe in it's efforts to roll out free Wi-Fi for Africa.
There is debate as to whether he is thinking happy or sad thoughts, with the broad consensus being that gold doesn't necessarily bring happiness. "Old Mac" decades before his time was envisioning the value of the internet instead....
The past of our land is indelibly linked to what we've taken from the ground. The future will be determined by what we take from the internet.
