I’m so happy for you that you got this terrific shot of him. How exciting for you! He is a fascinating looking bird and I don’t think I have ever heard of it before either.
Interesting to read your observation. Here on the Mediterranean coast of France they are so common as to be mundane. I see many on my morning dog walks. Their flight as they take-off id fascinationg, weaving this way and that to outsmart predators. Just once, my dog came back with one in its mouth (it survived). It is called 'huppe' in France because of the sound it makes.
