Zoo day. I hate zoos, and that seems funny coming from someone that spends as much time as possible there. I love the animals, and know it's necessary for the survival of some, but it does make me sad. This zoo is extraordinary in it's efforts to improve the life of the animals. They do care.
Although I'm not convinced they are necessary, I am sure that everyone who works at one does care. So that helps me to know that. Regardless...you seem to be awfully close here....!
I completely agree with your feelings about zoos. It is amazing to be able to see animals up close, but there just seems to be a sense of sadness there. Is it just us projecting our human emotions on to the animals? I hope so, for their sake. Beautiful shot.
I have the same mixed feelings about zoos of course. There's a tiger pic coming up in my outtake video that you will love! It was taken at the Sacramento zoo, where they have glass in front of the big cats too...so much fun for us, but must be a bit frustrating for the cat!
I don't like zoos either, Margaret. I've seen some deplorable ones. That said, I'm happy to hear that yours is so loving and caring. This photo is beautiful . . you seemed to have captured the soul of this lovely creature through his eyes.
You are helping to Maggie...it only takes one of your phtos to spark an idea in someone to do something re: protection or increased animal welfare. Your photos remind me that we are caretakers of this world...despite the actions of others. I can't save lions in africa but I can maintain my garden in Sydney that provides habitats for the native fairy wrens, native budgies and rosellas.
Gorgeous! Great shot! But he does look sad. I agree on zoos. An animal like this can never have the space and freedom he needs in a zoo even though they care and try their best! I very rarely comment on zoo shots - you and Bill D occasionally! :oD Cos you both take such amazing shots !
Yeah, when you think of it, they usually do a great job at taking care of them, but there is nothing better than having the animals in their natural habitat
Agreed--zoos are an alternative and sometimes have good breeding programs for endangered species, but not "the" place for most animals. Even the keepers feel that way, trust me. This is a beautiful photo but I do wonder what the animals are thinking sometimes.
I share your mixed feelings about zoos - keep in mind that most animals in modern zoos were bred in captivity and it's home to them - they don't know what they're missing and don't feel sorry for themselves. Many species would be hunted illegally into extinction if not for zoos.
@timandelke Elke, these lions are litter mates and were born at the zoo. They have wonderful programs for the animals that are endangered. I love animals so I support this.
What glorius detail..........an uber-Fav! Love everything about this. :-D
Have never been to a zoo; I just can't bring myself to do it. However, I agree with with you Maggie; there are numerous reasons why they are "benificial".........but still...........Hope your week is off to a great start, Les x
1. Lovely image. You composed it perfect and his is so soulful. 2. I agree with you on zoos. I love the animals but do hope they do what's for the best of the animal and not the pocketbook
geez, I am slipping if I missed this!! The closer, the better, you know I LOVE it!! Agree about the zoo, but ours makes great efforts as yours and also houses many animals and birds that otherwise could not survive in the wild, so that makes it better :)
I agree with everyone's comments about zoos. Our local zoo does a lot of education work about endangered species, encourages people to get involved with improving life for animals in the wild (eg, saving tigers) and making the enclosures a lot more like the animal's typical environment. No more bars and cages. They also try to help zoo guests make better choices as consumers. They have an educational campaign going on now about orangutans and palm oil-- I had no idea about that until I got the flier from the zoo.
Anyway - nice shot of this guy - I love the spots on his nose!
Thank you for you kind comment , you care and being patient
