I was keen to try out my camera's ability with fireworks and until now there have been none. Of course it was Guy Fawkes and in Oamaru the Weston School put on a show for the whole of the town. I was helping at the Lion's caravan selling chips and hot dogs and we were so busy but when the fireworks started, I had to leave for photos! I was thrilled at what I got.
The Journal has progressed from Nottingham to the Peak District. Ashbourne, Allerton, Dukeries, Welbeck and Newstead Abbey where Mum discovered the grave of Byron's big Newfoundland, Boatswain. He had written: ” Possessed beauty without vanity, strength without insolence, courage without ferocity and all the virtues of man without his vices” I thought that lovely! Interesting pub names like Isaac Walton Hotel, the Duck and the Partridge, Cats Fiddle etc. (I so enjoy reading about various places like Haddon Hall and finding out from Google -some of these places are enormous and so historic) She talks about lovely villages being spoilt by the railway and that some complaints were made on Stephenson's railway that "the cows would be frightened of the train"!
Now typed 15883 words!
Well done Maggiemae, I recently got my first go at fireworks, and it was so exciting to see a picture that looked like fireworks!! (I got a lot of duds as well)
I like that you can see the trail all the way from the ground.
Your journal sounds so exciting Maggiemae & we are following it with great interest. I can recognise some of the names you mention.
Such a wonderful firework shot & I would hope to do as well !!! Great clarity & definition!!!
@vskolnik It took ages to process - about 8 seconds before I could take another shot! Its the only setting I can get on my camera with this long time and because it's aperture is 6.4 it lets a lot of light in and so is useless during the day!
Beautiful capture Maggie, not sure when they're having them here, although doubtful as a total washout today! Loving the journal entries, recognise a lot of those places too:) ...
@tracywilliams Thank you Tracy - Your cameral probably has a setting that is right for fireworks - all you have to to do is keep the camera VERY steady!
What a great shot, Maggiemae. I look forward to using the setting on my camera for fireworks some day. I am enjoying your Mom's writing and travels and concerns. Interesting about her concerns about the railway and the cows and to think about so much transition today and what we have managed to do to our animals, land and ourselves.
@maggiemae Back then I am sure your Mom's worries were based on changes that were happening and not what many wanted. Today we have displaced animals due to growth and overpopulation, people starving, unemployed, losing homes, war, technology advancing every day it seems. Technology alone is huge as are the basics in life, talk to those on the east coast of the USA and find that the simple things in life mean so much as many have lost everything but still have each other, (that is what is most important) and are working together the best that they can. With no power so many have lost their connection to what is happening outside. I had thought many times, what happens if a satellite in space goes out, internet, cell phones go out and we cannot function as day to day life depends on these electronics. Sad that we have had to change the way we live because this is the way we have to live. I hope I am making sense as I am typing this tired and need to get to sleep. There is luckily good in this world and it is nice to find it including this site where we get to share so much and all have the love of photography in common and the love of life. We are so lucky for this reason alone.
The Peak District where your Mum visited is just so beautiful. We went walking there in the spring with some friends, near Matlock, I'd love to go back! Love your fireworks capture!
