Eclipse by maggiemae

Eclipse

Unfortunately the clouds obscured it completely so all I did was take a photo of the sea from our deck when the eclipse was at its maximum. I caught a swallow zooming around on the left too!

Mum wrote in her 1929 journal: ". Passed Kirkoswald where are the graves of Tam O’Shanter and Soutar Johnnie" so, of course I had to find out about these two identities. A soutar is a shoemaker and: In 1789 Burns was asked to produce a witch tale to accompany a picture of Auld Kirk Alloway in the book Antiquities of Scotland. His response was a poem regarded by many as his masterpiece: Tam o' Shanter. The story was based on an old legend about two Ayrshire farmers who spent too long drinking and on their way home saw witches dancing with the devil in the ruined kirk at Alloway.
In Dumfries, Mum wrote about their car: "It was quite a good run and brother Morris behaved well except for puncturing his right front. It was rather fun mending it. We had a good run and passed various estates to Annan where we had our tyre mended and lunched off the road- a steaming hot pie, tin of pineapple, cream bun and brandy snap. We collected the tyre and were told it had a pinch and one nail or two an they were removed. When I did not pull the wheel around quick enough, I was asked if I’d had my porridge today! She rather amusingly wrote that she was furious because sister Louie had had her hair cut far too short! Its 'awa' to Gretna Green now. 32906 words

What a lovely view you have. You have framed your photo in an eclipse!!
I put my filters on and had a go at the eclipse...haven't looked at them on the computer, but might get one.

Not a bad consolation photo, Maggie. Was overcast here all day too. You'd never know there was an eclipse today.

Wonderful commentary Maggie, love the bit about 'brother Morris' & their lunch. Exquisite detail she writes. My brother was at school in Dumfries & your mum is making your way down our way.
Didn't know you had an eclipse!

looks like a through the keyhole shot - very cool - and 32,000 words. I need to catch up with your last few journal updates - definititely worth turning into a published book I reckon!!

I know all these places, Maggiemae, as I'm from Ayr beside Alloway. My Dad could recite the whole of the poem 'Tam O' Shanter (and it's a long poem) while I can still remember the bit I had to learn at school.

LOL that your mom was upset because her sister cute her hair too short. I love that you research as much as you can about what she writes.
November 13th, 2012
@yonnie She mentioned that 'her curls were so expensive" I don't know what she meant - perhaps they both had a perm and Louie cut all hers off!
November 13th, 2012
The view from your deck is wonderful. I bet you enjoy that a lot.
And I remember Tam O'Shanter.

@kwiksilver @cdonohoue Well, its not as good as it looks, - I got up on the outside table and wound the tripod up as far as it would go and zoomed off over the house roofs to get this shot!

Beautiful shot and beautiful view. I enjoy your mother's journal entry. I have read the word soutar before, but did not understand what it meant.
