I forgot about these gorgeous purple poppies that pop up around our garden. They grow so quickly and are not noticed till they produce these thick and beautiful flowers.
A struggling morning on Mum's diary today! So many words I couldn't fathom! Still, I learnt about the small "unspoiled' town of Ross and its Castle Wilton which is so old - dating from Stephen! Then there was Gloucester and it's Cathedral, the Battle of Crecy, a "queer' oak effigy of Robert Curthase, son of William the Conqueror, Priest's lavatories the Hoopers Monument! Then theres the Great Abbey which I got confused with the Cathedral. I found it was St Peters Abbey at Tewkesbury she was writing about. The two of the bought tickets to the Gloucester Cathedral choral fete and appeared to have tea there... she writes:
"We enjoyed the service but were disappointed at being shunted out, not even seeing King John’s tomb. Still, we had a good tea and enjoyed the choirs- more than can be expressed. Not a thing could we see, on aaccount of the huge Gothic Pillars but we heard and appreciated, Gerontius by Edward Elgar."
I couldn't read the word Gerontius so there was more research on Elgar.. he had an interesting life!
I so appreciate her description of hearing the choir. Such a wonderful way of sharing how much she enjoyed and appreciated it. Much better than writing, "it was good!". I heard a beautiful choir yesterday and her description echoes how much I enjoyed it.
Yolanda will snip this one and wear it in her hair -- a perfect match! I love how you're going about transcribing your mother's journal and looking up the places and people she mentions. And then sharing it with us!
