Three little chickies staring at the reflection of the Southern Cross in the Sky! The pointers are there at the top as well. This is what you see in the Southern Skies in New Zealand and Australia. There was a lot of cluckings going on until they decided these were not for eating!
I have come to the end of the first journal and Mum and her sister, Louie are in Warwickshire. She writes about Robert Dudley who I have never heard of but now do, and St Mary's Chapel where she sees a ducking stool - they tied the women to it and repeatedly ducked them! Goodness knows what they had done. This is around 1575. Weeping effigies, a dwarf's armour, a beautifiul Greek vase discovered near Hadrians Villa in Italy "attributed to Lysippos IV cent BC." Her journal continues:
"We walked along Mill Lane to see the old timbered houses then to the car after we had purchased snaps from an old man at the gate and along a pretty road through quite a large village of Kenilworth and and ¾ mile past. Through a tiny ford to the Park. The Tippy Type Kenilworth [castle] defies descriptions. Grand Keep Towers, tremendously thick walls – the Banqueting Halls where one’s imagination runs rife, the Leicester building with square windows and quite lots of them, and remains of spiral stairs, floors etc. We followed Amy Robsart ‘upstairs and downstairs” watched Queen Elizabeth [1st] arrive in her stately progress to make her historic visit to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester.
“It’s a shattered life of vanished splendour”, I read. It was grand!"
@franklein I'm sure you would have, Frances! I just take a few shots then decide to add something and then get an inspiration from that! Thanks for your comments!
very sweet photo. Love the astronomical bits!! Your Mum was in my area. My son has just done a big piece of work for his history GCSE on Kenilworth Castle. These days Kenilworth is definitely more of a town than a village.
@maggiemae Yes- they were. I receive a tremendous amount of support and gratefulness from my church family. It is very much like the community and support we have here.
Lovely shot to represent the "ducking stool". I've said it before, but it needs repeating - I totally love the way your mum's voice comes through in her journal. Such a glorious journey. I look forward to the next one!
What does it mean "to duck them"??? Your mom sure had a grand adventure. Looking forward to your typing up her next journal. Thank you for sharing.
