One of Mum's travel album photos where she wrote of the narrow streets ". It is said that even the cats shrug their shoulders when they walk along and touch the houses! This is her sister, Louie standing here. Through Penryn and Perranarworthal down to Falmouth and back to Truro to get some cash and enjoy a Cornish Pasty. They got a block in the petrol and the poor Austin could hardly make it up the hills and then it stopped altogether!
"A car or 2 passed and we gazed at our engine and tried to look disconsolate. Then a nice man with 2 ladies in the Dickie enquired if we were all right so we shook our heads. He stopped and so did another and very soon we were glad to find a spanner being manipulated by an experienced hand. The gentleman left but the other worked and discovered the block which he alternately blew, sucked out the part etc and finally we were off–not a hitch."
Lostwithiel, Looe, Liskeard to Plymouth where:
"found our way to the hoe, near which we put up for the night, a rotten place too, - crosseyed old miser, overcooked dinner, silly maid - with fights in the morning. After much persuasion, the old thing gave us two holey towels in exchange for one decent one"
I don't think Plymouth appealed to her - the harbour was 'befogged" but the aquarium they visited she said "it would be difficult to imagine a more interesting hour!"
My Dragon has come out of the cave - Ann Le Fevre suggested uninstalling it from John's computer and reinstalling it on mine! So far it's working but I have found it can't differentiate between male and mail!
Fantastic old shot and story! I laughed out loud when I ready that even the cats shrugged their shoulders at the narrow streets :) hehe
And yayyyy for the dragon coming out of its cave! woo hoo!!! :) And I guess mail and male would be tricky for a dragon to understand :) hehe Keep the gorgeous and interesting shot coming! :)
Love the photo and your mom's description of her stay in Plymouth with the cross eyed miser and silly maid -- It sounds as if she stayed in Fawlty Towers. Can just see Basil exchanging the good towel for two raggedy ones! I never had much luck wit the dragon. It couldn't understand half of what I said no matter how clearly I thought I was speaking. I used to get mad and yell at it. Did no good, just made the dragon more grumpy.
such an interesting old photo... and love hearing about your mum's travels... if Dragon is anything like Siri on the iPhone, it is NOT to be trusted ;p
I am glad you've gotten your Dragon software to work again, but I'm not surprised that it makes mistakes. Love hearing what Mum and Louie are up to now!
Yes there are plenty of large hill down that part of the country , clovelly is a beautiful place ... Judging by that great picture of your mothers it hasn't changed much since 1929.
Enjoying you priecious work as always Maggie .
I have very fond memories of Clovelly.... I have a faded photo of my first husband (who died tragically young at 33) standing about where your mums sister is..... Such a quaint village. Beautifully nostalgic photo Maggie.
I knew this was Clovelly before I read the title, not because I've ever been, but because my mother has a photo just like this is her album with her standing on the street (1950s I think.). Brilliant took me back!!
And yayyyy for the dragon coming out of its cave! woo hoo!!! :) And I guess mail and male would be tricky for a dragon to understand :) hehe Keep the gorgeous and interesting shot coming! :)
Glad the Dragon is working again.
Enjoying you priecious work as always Maggie .
