We have naked ladies in our garden.... by maggiemae

We have naked ladies in our garden....

That's what they are called but heaven knows why! No resemblance to any that I know, not that I've seen many in the past years! These wee hover flies were helicoptering around but I couldn't catch one in the air.

Such fun (as Miranda's mother says)!
Are the flies the naked ladies or the flesh coloured lilies? very impressive sized flowers!

Maggie this is just lovely. We have the flower naked ladies here as well, but they are much brighter almost orange in colour. This is such a suttle colour and great capture with the hovering fly

@cdonohoue apparently, Cathy - The common name "naked lady" stems from the plant's pattern of flowering when the foliage has died down.
April 15th, 2013
@happypat Their botannical name is amaryllis, Pat! The flies might be naked too, one doesn't know!

April 15th, 2013
Naked or not this flower is very beautiful, the petals are like drapery
April 15th, 2013
Lovely shot. I call these surprise lilies. People here call them naked ladies because the plant no longer has leaves when the flower stalk appears.

@jackie8 Thank you Jackie for those nice words and the fav!
April 16th, 2013

April 16th, 2013
Beautiful!! Super clarity and terrific detail.
April 16th, 2013
Beautiful - we have a sculpture near us and it is nicknamed the 'Twickenham Naked Ladies' - yours are better!
April 16th, 2013
@emmadurnford Would a photo of these naked ladies be forthcoming, Emma?
April 16th, 2013
I think they should be featured, I'm finding it a challenge as I am back working from home on all the pics I took in SE Asia so little inspiration this week! The 'Ladies' look best in the summer with bright green plants but I'll have a look next time I'm in Twickenham!
April 16th, 2013
I love these naked ladies, my mum grows them too. Beautiful shot Maggimae.
April 17th, 2013
