Tin Man's lunch by maggiemae

Tin Man's lunch

The cornish pasty was taken down the tin mines in Cornwall for the worker's lunch if I remember correctly! I saw these in the local bakery and as they were rather expensive, decided to make them myself. Prepared with swede, potato, onion, they were positively delicious!

Three good things;
1. Decided to make the homemade tomato sauce to go with these pasties.
2. Huge frost this morning gave a good photo op.
3. Uke practice for an upcoming concert went well particularly with the song, "Anarchy"
A Cornish Pastie....looks good with a nice crisp pastry! You did a fantastic job of yours & would be much more nutritious! They used to fill one end with savoury & the other end sweet for pudding apparently!
Frosty morning picture coming up?

@happypat Is it "pasty" or "pastie", Pat? I could do the frost, never thought of it.

Lovely photo, the lighting is very good, and the pasty looks delicious too.

Maggiemae, this is a great cookbook worthy food shot! It stands out beautifully on the plain white plate and the black background. I had never heard of this dish before and had to google it. I found a recipe and wondered if you prepared it the same. Yours looks so much yummier than the one pictured on this site: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/cornish-pasty/

@cimes1 The traditional pasty seems to be wrapped as mine is with the opening along the top and wiggled. Your recipe from this site doesn't look as nice, I agree.

Looks good

That looks positively yummy!! Love the way you have presented the meal. Definitely cookbook-worthy! I always thought it was "pasty" so look forward to seeing what Pat ( @happypat ) says. Interesting about the savoury and sweet as well.

@maggiemae @kwiksilver Pasty ...I am wrong & you are both right.....just spelt it like it came into my head but with a Cornish pasty it is quite specific spelling I think!

Fantastic capture. Presented well on the plate and composed well for the shot. Magazine worthy for sure!

@grammyn Thanks Katy! It was a bit burnt on the upper ridge and the wiggly bits aren't even. I didn't want to test my patience!

@sarasdadandmom I think next time I will put chillies in them - not that I'm going down into a cold tin mine!

A super Cornish Pasty , nicely captured and the presentation worthy of any cookbook illustration !! As a welsh girl with English as a second language ,without sounding pig-headed !! one is Pasty ,more than one is Pasties Whatever you may call it -- well done you Maggie !!!!Fav especially for the presentation !

Looks delicious! We have something similar here in Michigan. They're called pasties also, and originated with the miners going down the iron ore/copper mines, I believe. Quite popular, especially with the tourists. :)
June 24th, 2014
Oh, yes, we eat them with gravy. :)
June 24th, 2014

Gee you had me worried there for a minute. I was wracking my brain trying to remember when the Tin man in the Wizard of Oz ate something!
Beautiful food shot! I love how you placed the food on the plate!

June 24th, 2014
Very nicely presented. Looks delicious.
June 24th, 2014
Homemade? You are so clever! Apparently they didn't eat the pastry 'handle' as the tin mining was poisonous.
June 24th, 2014
It's my favourite bit!
June 24th, 2014
@judithg Do you mean the pastry as the "handle", Judith? Thats the best part when made with short pastry!
June 24th, 2014
@maggiemae yes that bit!
June 24th, 2014
My friend Judy buys a not-appealing-at-all premade version of this. I am not a good pastry maker, but if I was I'd be asking for the recipe! Looks wonderful!
June 25th, 2014
The ingredients sound delicious and the finished product looks superb, and so well presented on that white plate.
