My dad was once a Volunteer Firefighter in Weirton, West Virginia. This is his old sterling silver badge. He spent his life as a locksmith - he actually taught me how to pick a lock. To this day I know how to re-key a lock so that old keys will not work in the door. I did that very thing when we moved into our current home.

He did teach my brother and I ways to do things. My great memory that I have carried on to our two sons is this: Teach them how to do something. Once they get it down, ask, “Show me two more ways you can get the same end result.”
