LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL by markp

LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL

I think this is a three year old, and will moult into full adult plumage in the spring.
Lovely detailed shot.

ETA: Will we get to see the greater black-backed gull at some point?

It will be somebody licensed by the British Trust of Ornithology. In Britain and Ireland over 900,000 birds are ringed by 2,600 trained ringers, mostly volunteers.
They have been doing this for more than a 100 years.
There is a vast range of sizes to fit just about every species. Most are fitted to young nestlings but occasionally they set up mist nets to capture adult birds.
Ringing birds helps understand how long they live, where and when they move around. New discoveries about migration routes and other things are continuing to be found.
One disadvantage to this system, is that normally you have to recapture the bird or come across its body to collect the data.
The new idea, with suitably sized birds is to fit, larger, readable rings, such as the Black Headed Gulls, ( like I have posted recently),so they can be reported far more easily.
I think there is scheme running at the moment, with about four different species, but I have only found Black Headed Gulls so far.
They are also fitted with the small metal rings as well.
