Not all cones are created equal... by marlboromaam

Not all cones are created equal...

The one on the left is a loblolly pine cone. Loblolly are common and everywhere around here. The one on the right is a long-needle (or long-leaf) pine-cone. Long-needle pines are far less abundant and I've only found two growing around here. Sadly, the one that produced this lovely cone will probably be clear cut this week. I celebrate their differences. How very dull and boring the world would be if everything was the same.

That's quite interesting about the difference in the cones identifying which kind of pine they come from - now I'm going to have to study the pine cones around here

Such a difference! I took some from the south of France and they are so big and strong, they have survived for more than 10 years now.

@geertje Do you know what kind of pine tree they came from? I would love to know.

@marlboromaam probably the aleppo pine, but I'm not totally certain. Hard to determine now. It's such a long time ago...
