Skating

Many Dutch share the strange desire to explore the open water as soon as it LOOKS safe to walk on, after a few freezing nights.

Today we went skating on the local pond. A little crackling but no major cracks and pretty flat too, despite the snow.
be careful!

Don't worry @houdiniem. A wet suit isn't the worst thing :-)

Neat in bw. I like how all of the scratches in the ice stand out.

Love it! I used to skate on a frozen pond near my childhood home in Washington State (not Washington D.C. ... ) Tho we didn't actually have skates, we used just our boots to slide around on it. Very fun memory!

@aromatic You're right Jane, this is just the time to learn my kids about 'safety first'. I'm always careful and we never go out alone or too soon.

That doesn't apply to all the Dutch. There are always the dumb and the stupid, as I mentioned last year http://365project.org/mastermek/365/2012-02-04.
This year too, a 58-year old man went out skating just by himself on an open lake. He went missing and was found 2 days later under the ice...

It won't stop me from heaving fun though! Skating on natural ice is part of our culture and great fun too. We have to take the risk for granted but we'll also be careful of course.
