I posted this yesterday without explanation. This morning I went on the internet for more information on barn quilts and found this web site: http://barnquiltinfo.com/index.html
Large painted quilt block patterns (8' x 8' seems to be the general standard) mounted on barns. According to the web site, many are part of "quilt trails" that "take visitors on a drive through the countryside where barn quilts are mounted on farm buildings, on homes, along fences, and sometimes on freestanding posts."
The barn quilt phenomenon and the American Quilt Trail began in 2001 and there are barn quilts all over the U.S. and Canada. I don't know if they exist outside North America. Looking through the listing for Riley County, Kansas where I live, I don't see the Ludwigs' barn quilt listed. I don't know how long they have had it. I generally don't see their house and barn from this point of view, as I come from town which is the opposite direction, and didn't know they had it until yesterday when Sue said I ought to come and take pictures of it. When I next talk with her, I'll ask if they've submitted their information to the Kansas Flint Hills Quilt Trail.
@hjbenson@dodoview Thanks Harry and Doris @suebarni Sue, as I result of your comment, I went out on the internet for more info on barn quilts, and have added more commentary and a link above.
