@northy thanks for that i wasnt sur i would have internet access but my plans changed somewhat...

Mary your coolpix manual says you have a night portrait setting in your scene modes, use this with flash set to y, and if you want you can ignore the advice to put the camera on a tripod , you can move the camera and get all kinds of effects, with one subject frozen in place with the flash.... this page of your manual has info . https://www.manualslib.com/manual/992455/Nikon-Coolpix-S9900.html?term=night&selected=7&page=86#manual

@kali66 Thanks, Kali. I've been very focused on helping my mom with clearing out the apartment she is giving up. We are almost done with that. I'll give you a challenge tomorrow (Monday, here in Kansas - sorry it's later where you live)
