The Moon Nov 7, 2013

1/80sec, f/9, ISO 200, Sigma 50-500mm at 500mm, and -2/3EV.

Wanted to get the Moon and Venus last night but the Bay Area weather was too foggy. Tonight the fog lifted but Venus was too far away from the Moon to get them in the same image.
Really great moon shot Mike.So much detail

Excellent shot, I would love to be able to capture the moon, I haven't managed anything decent yet, it's a bit difficult with only an 18-55!

@joysfocus Hey, thanks for the comment and Fav! I really like taking moon shots and I do try to get them with something in the foreground, but this one looked good as a standalone image.

Great moon shot Mike. Looked about the same up here in SF. I am surprised by the 1/80 sec, I'd have thought longer. Makes me want to do more with the DSLR though I will stick with the phone for 365.

@georgej @deburahiru Geroge and Deb, the moon is a rather bewildering thing to capture. It is a very bright object surrounded by blackness. Use spot metering if you can and adjust the shutter speed and aperture so that you don't overexpose. There is a Looney 11 rule to help: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Looney_11_rule

Which can be stated as all 1's if you want to simplify even further:
With ISO 100 film / setting in the camera, one sets the aperture to f/11 and the shutter speed to 1/100 or 1/125 second (on some cameras 1/125 second is the available setting nearest to 1/100 second).

Having a 500mm lens does help a lot, and using Live View on the Nikon with zoom to assist in focusing really helps. I've been reading up and just downloaded some software for planetary stacking to improved your final image even more. I'll give this a try at some point.

Thanks as always for the views and comments! Have a good veterans day tomorrow!
