I sure hadn't! This is called Rambutan - from Guatamala and supposed to be quite good for you. You score it around the center and break it open. The inside is white and feels like a hard-boiled egg but sweet like a grape. There is a pit in the center that is poisonous.
I sometimes am able to volunteer at our local food pantry and that is where I came across this. There were quite a few left over :) - but you can't hold over fresh produce.
