My One-Eyed Friend

This little female house finch has just one good eye - I was puzzled at first why I was able to walk up so closely to the bird bath - then noticed that she could not use her other eye (finches are so scrappy - probably from another finch fight) which was facing me. Took this shot after she turned because I liked the lighting.
Oh no! Glad he is managing pretty well. He's very handsome with his highlighted feathers! Beautiful shot!

Looks like she has House Finch eye disease. New research on this just came out this week: http://blog.allaboutbirds.org/2014/08/25/house-finch-eye-disease-research-other-species/
Be sure to wash your feeders regularly and wash your hands after touching the feeder. It is caused by a bacteria.

@annepann Thank you, Anne, for the link - read it and will follow through on the instructions. Interesting that it really just seems to be so prevalent in the house finch.

This reminded me of a painting I saw at the Dutch Masters exhibit...of a bird with a tiny chain on its foot, that sits on this dowel rod and has this "dipper"...supposedly, in the old days, they had the bird dip water and fill this container...a sort of entertainment. Weird, but that is what they said. I loved the painting...and I love this. Fav

@espyetta That is really interesting - hard to imagine, isn't it.

This is such a lovely picture. The background gives it a painterly appearance. Sad about the little finch having an eye disease. Thank you to @annepann for sharing the link about this illness. I'll be sharing the link myself with others I know who are avid bird feeder watchers.
