A Bit of History

Check this on black. This is the historic War Eagle Mill, first built in 1832. Sixteen years later, it was washed downstream in a flood, but rebuilt on the same foundation. In 1862 it was destroyed by Confederate soldiers during the Civil War to keep the Union soldiers from using it. Rebuilt again, and burned once more in 1924. This current mill on the same foundation is said to be the only undershot water wheel currently in use. The grist mill still operates daily. 2nd floor is a gift shop and the 3rd floor a restaurant with excellent corn bread and beans. Had lunch there today. You can just see the hint of the water wheel behind the fencing. And yes, that bridge is still used by cars today (one way at a time!)

A very well known crafts fair is held on these grounds every fall attracting vendors and buyers from many states.
Love this capture, Milanie. Instant fav!

Love this place. Went there last fall to take pictures. Did you have lunch in the mill? Their food is quite good.

@aat3877 Sure did - Bill had their beans and cornbread and I had chicken salad on a warmed croissant - some of the best chicken salad I've had!

@milaniet I was so tempted to try that the last time I was there but had heard so much about the beans and cornbread. I was not disappointed. Can't wait to go back.

@cashew how interesting to hear someone not in the south (though I'm not sure where you live come to think of it) speak of grits! Not being a big fan, I didn't pay attention, but they are continually working the grist mill and producing flour and have many food products for sale in that line to take home and make yourself. It is a fascinating place in a beautiful part of the state.

Very neat story! I'm a graduate of Auburn University, Alabama. Our logo is "War Eagle!" I wonder if there is any connection?? Great photo.

@milaniet Milanie, I was born in MN., raised in Alaska, and live in Georgia since 1977! So, I have been here most of my life now, so guess that makes me southern! LOL The first time I had grits I put milk and sugar on them!!! ROFL! They are really nasty that way!! I was thinking Cream of Wheat!!! We have an old grist mill about 1/4 of a mile from our house, no longer in use!! No water wheel though!! We are right on the line with Alabama and their college football team is War Eagle!!! So cool!!

sad history, must be very interesting to visit these places. thanks for sharing\
fav

@cashew That explains the grits! We're both replanted southern girls. I've been an Auburn fan for many years - nephew's wife graduated from there - and Malhazan was my favorite here in Arkansas.

|What a great shot - you've got so much in it and gorgeous light too.

Great shot, and brought back some fond memories, I visited there many years ago. I lived in AR for 12 years, both my daughters were born there, so maybe I'm just a little bit southern(?)but I never did get to like grits...at all!!! :P
