Or else extremely deaf and blind - though he appears perfectly normal :) I usually can't get anywhere near these guys - they hear the car coming and they're gone. This one was still there when I left and he let me walk up fairly near. Muddy river from all the rain lately.
What a wonderful photo, Milanie! I got such a laugh from your commentary on the character. I think the same thing when I happen to encounter a cooperative animal...that there must be something wrong with it if it's let me get a decent photo.
Great shot! I am jealous! I have one that frequents the pond down the road, but I can't get anywhere near without him taking off. After reading this though, there is still hope for me! :)
Nice capture. I echo those previous comments. I did notice that your exposure is being influenced by all the background water, causing a slight overexposure that has resulted in the lower half of the face being "blown out". You might want to try dialing in about 1/2 a stop of negative exposure compensation if he ever gives you a second chance.
@mwerner Thanks so much for the tutorial - I really appreciate knowing how to handle that glare. Now if I can just remember to do it next time :) It would sure make a difference.
Do you remember the TV show "Laugh In" and the skit Arty Johnson and Ruth Bussey did? He was the "dirty old man". When I see a heron they remind me of him with his trench coat

I have found that wildlife refuges are great for getting close to birds if there is one near you.
