I've googled several sites to try to understand the difference in their markings - but unless I have one of each at the same time to observe, I don't think I'm going to figure it out :) So here's my finch at the feeder!
Purple Finch for sure, though both species are quite variable in the amount of red they have, so I can understand your difficulty. Beautiful capture of this bright male.
Yes, as others have said- Purple Finch. For me, I tell the difference by looking at how much red is on the head. If it only looks like a sparrow who's had a little red painted on him, it's a House Finch. But if it looks like someone dumped a paint can of red on the head- it's a Purple Finch- the name always makes me laugh as they don't look purple at all! Good shot.
