I was passing the little stream - posted 10-4 - when this heron flew down. I got off a shot and he stayed. So I crept closer and sat on the grass at the side of the road. He had no concern about me being there. After 10 decent shots I left. When I stood up he finally flew off. If they didn't grow up to be such sissies :)
Great capture. Nice of it to sit around for you to get the shots. Sometimes, they will and other times, it's off as soon as they see you. Does look like a young one.
Marvelous shot. Not sure I have ever seen a first year heron like this. Stokes says "1st year: like adult, but with all-dark crown, dark upper mandible; extensive grayish streaking on neck." He checks all the boxes of that description. Big Fav.
@annepann Thanks for the confirmation. I was strictly going by size and behavior. Don't you know those pick-ups going by on the way to the highschool were wondering what I was doing sitting on the grass by the road!
