This is the closest to the water I've caught this heron. Absolutely never seen him show any interest in finding anything to eat from this little inlet. This may be his resting spot and then hunts elsewhere?
Lovely shot, wish I could find a regular Heron haunt that lets you get close. What does he eat ? Fish, frogs, newts, large insects, possibly small snakes, young birds, and small mammals, mice etc. I have seen recently, can't remember if it was on here or elsewhere a set of photos showing a Heron swallowing a large rat.
I think those are neat birds they look so interesting and have wonderful color. I've noticed that your herons have a slightly different color though, I do like the dark gray or blue around his shoulder ....Great shot Milanie!
@milaniet I thought about this after I replied to you. His head is up. he knows you are there and is watching you, probably realises you are not a threat, you have been there before and then gone, they are quite clever. When they are after food his head is pointed down, they will stand perfectly still for ages before they strike. If he was resting his head might be tucked into his body. Try getting to his regular spot really quietly or very early and sit still and wait for him to turn up. I can watch them, i even have shots of one catching and swallowing a frog, just can't get close.
