A pale blue Nigella damascena. The generic name Nigella (Lat. Nigellus = black) refers to black colored seeds. The species name damascena means "a native from Damascus” (Syria) and is seen by the botanist as evidence that it has been introduced in Europe by trade-relations between Venice and the Near East, probably in the 14th century.
It’s a flower with lots of names. In German one of the common names (literally translated) is “virgin in the green”. In English there are names like love-in-a-mist or ragged lady.
Interesting (for me): In our region, in former times,… (a long time ago, before texting, phoning, writing letters),... young women used these flowers as symbol to reject men. If you sent these flowers, no words were needed and the signal was clear.
My picture today has no meaning, no signal! I just like this beautiful blue flower.
