The cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) is not an original indigenous plant in Central Europe. Originally it comes from the eastern Mediterranean. It is believed to have been introduced unconsciously with seeds from the Mediterranean area. Since then, the cornflower is a constant companion of cornfields. It is a biological indicator, which indicates how much the fields were fertilized in recent years. Less fertization means more cornflowers and poppies.
Though, in many areas of the world Centaurea cyanus is a neophyte.
