We went to the medieval market in Rheinfelden today. This small and old town next to the Rhine River surrounded by its old town walls, is an ideal scenario for the market, where everything is sold from medieval costumes to traditional home-made medical remedies. Hundreds of fully dressed people in medieval costumes, who animate the town’s streets and the market, as they portray noblemen, beggars, artisans, jugglers, musicians and knights.
This scene with the working cobbler and his cobbler’s lamp caught my eye instantly. I loved the light and the colours. And I haven’t seen a cobbler’s lamp in a while. I felt like transferred in another time.
The cobbler’s or shoemaker’s lamp (Schusterkugel) is a water-filled colorless glass flask in spherical form, which was used by cobblers to illuminate their workshops and which guided the glow onto the workbench. In this way, the low-light hours of the day during the twilight could be used for work.
When I first looked at this image, I thought the person was not real. But as I read your message I understand that I am looking at a live peek into the past. Very cool capture M. :)
@shylaine3304@redy4et@novab Thanks for the nice comments. Yes it is a real person indeed. He fitted so well in his beautifully arranged showmakers both. Not really a candid shot though. I asked, if it would be ok, to take some pictures? He nodded and said: "yes, but thanks for asking". Made me overthinking my strategy a bit. Because sometimes I sneak a picture and sometimes I'm not courageous enough to ask.
