2017-09-11 discussion at the office...

... or "the difficulty of talking about (my) photography".

I removed a dry palm leaf from one of our office butterfly palm's (Dypsis lutescens) and put the dry feathered leaf a bit hidden on my desk. Apparently some eagles eyes saw it nevertheless...

Colleague: can I throw this away?
Me: no, please not. (Already knowing what will follow…)
Colleague: why not?
Me: I will need it.
Colleague: what for?
Me: (reluctantly) for my photo project. (Not a lot of people know about my photography)
Colleague: ????? (Thinking)
Me: ---- (Trying hard, not to excuse and explain myself)
Colleague: you want to take a picture of this dry thing? (Raising the eyebrows and showing other signs of severe disapproval)
Me: yes
Colleague: ok, I want to see THAT picture.

Well here is the picture. ;-)

Addendum 2017-09-12
What happened, when I showed the picture.

Me: you wanted to see the photography-outcome of the dry leaf. This is it.
Colleague 1: hmpfh (or how I would translate the "noise" she made)
Other colleague walks by, and says: wow, this is great. Love it.

well, it's a wonderful image. that oh-so-delicate tiny slice of focus works very well for me. isn't that part of the definition for the eye of the beholder challenge, that we would shoot something that other people would not consider worthy of a photograph?!

And I thought the clueless friends only lived in MY neighbourhood! The last comment I heard from a friend when I deemed to share what I'd been working on, a several-step project to turn my photo into a sphere,
"So what do you plan to use THAT for?"

*Sigh*

PS...Kudos for going forward and taking a creative DOF image of a dried palm. I understand!

Haha - I've often seen that puzzled look, that look that says that I've lost my mind. That's ok, there are others that think like I do - there's a photo possibility everywhere. This turned out beautifully! Faved

I love this picture. Love how it doesn't take much to get an amazing image. Just some skill and imagination!!
September 12th, 2017
You captured this wonderfully, the dof, soft light, curves and colours are really spectacular on the dry leaf that was ready for the garbage. Obviously she does not see the beautify that is all around her waiting to be viewed.

Love stunning photos of the every day. Nicely done.

Nice DoF It seems there are those who support us in our artistic endeavors and those who don't. Those that don't probably will never get it.

The moral of the story is that you can't please all the people all the time. It's sad that she doesn't have an imagination any more and see the beauty in something like this. Well done and stick to what you are doing. Fav
