You can spot this fan-maker at work through his shop window in Valencia, and he tells he deliberately chose this location in a quaint pedestrian street so that people could see him at work and learn more about the age old tradition of Valencia fan painting. He is from a family making fans since 1810. The work really has been passed down the generations: of 8 sons, 6 became fan makers and according to family tradition each son worked with his brothers until he got married when he’d break off and start his own small business.
So nice that he has carried on the tradition. We have good friends in Valencia and they brought me a hand painted fan on one of their visits. I wonder if he was the painter.
