Kinnaird Head Lighthouse, is not just any lighthouse, but Scotlands first on mainland and the structure is build in a castles tower.
In 1787, Kinneard Head Lighthouse started off life as a giant lamp positioned on the roof of the castle tower. When structural problems began to appear, Robert Stevenson engineered a foundation, walls and spiral staircase (above) through the heart of the castle tower, and preserved the original structure.
It is still in working order (although nowadays, replaced by a smaller computer driven electric light) and when you get to see it, the guide will wind up the weights, to get the hyper radial lens turning. (First time I have seen one working up close). All very interesting,... but my eye and heart loved the spiral staircase with the weights on chains best.
Oh, that's a lovely capture and thank you for the information. I've never been there, but it's now on my list - which is currently growing, thanks to you and Kim!
