@bruni It represents a sound - the same sound is represented by gn in Italian (signor) or ny in Catalan (canya). I think the ñ is unique to Spanish language, and it appears in some words as important as the name of the country (España). So, by law, every keyboard sold in Spain has to have this key.

That is interesting, I did not realise there are keyboards like this, but it makes perfect sense!
