Want some marzipan? by monicac

Want some marzipan?

Today is a local holiday in my area - we celebrate our identity and also Lovers Day. In the past, it was a rural area. Field workers didn't have much money to buy their loved ones presents, so they used to give their girlfriends/wives fruit and vegetables wrapped up in a kerchief as a token of love on October 9th. At the moment, people keep giving their loved ones a kerchief, but it's full of marzipan fruits and vegetables rather than real ones. All bakeries make artisan marzipan resembling fruits, and it's absolutely delicious. I don't think any single household is not enjoying these sweets today.
This takes me back to the amazing marzipan that we saw in the markets in Barcelona.

They look good. Interesting information, too. Enjoy your holiday, Monica.

Oh that looks so good! And the story is so interesting! Never heard about "Lovers Day"... but I love marzipan! When I think of marzipan I think of "Sinterklaas". When I was a kid we had it in November until December 5th when we do presents. We were told that Sinterklaas came from Spain, so there might be a connection.
Being abroad I have tried to make marzipan myself :)

Love this - thanks for sharing this tradition (I learn so much on 365, part of the reason I love it so much)

@merrelyn @mittens @ingrid01 @ninaganci @linnypinny @busylady @dutchothotmailcom @bkbinthecity @pattyblue Thanks a lot. These pieces of marzipan are handmade and fresh, they taste way better than the marzipan you buy in supermarkets!
@merrelyn If you liked it in Barcelona, you would have loved it in Toledo. There, nuns make it with the same recipe they've used for centuries, and you can buy it from the convent when it's still warm . One of the best things I've ever eaten.

@monicac We loved Toledo too, but didn't know about the marzipan :(
