interesting half and half contrast there - some of these walls were built as employment for locals when times were tough, the local lord of the manor decided on a project that he wanted done that meant he could pay people who weren't getting any money - the estate wall in Stalbridge and, if I remember correctly, the folly at Stoodley Pike are both examples of this.
