Killdeer in the tidal flats

I made a special trip on the ferry just to take photos of birds in a nearby bird sanctuary and there were no birds, until I saw these small killdeer peaking their heads above the tidal flat grasses. I took this with my 100-400mm lens with a 1.2 teleconverter. With the teleconverter on, I was unable to take the f stop below f8. I would have loved to take it to f4 to blur the background. Without the teleconverter, it would have been much smaller. As it was, when I was processing I zoomed in quite a bit also. My Merlin app said that these were rare in this particular area, so I was very pleased that I was able to capture it.
I have pictures of the birds in these type of grasses and it is hard to get a good shot. THis is excellent

@joansmor I also had to manually focus because my camera wanted to focus on the grasses rather than the bird.

Beautifully captured, as @joansmor says! I love the tonality of the entire scene.

looks fine without the blurred background - at least the background is natural and has its own interest. Very good capture and I am so glad your trip wasn't wasted.

Looks good captured in its environment. This distance / lens will work well during the days on a safari when the light is good.
