It is a Hawthorne. Farmers never cut them down because Fairy's are supposed to live under them. And the farmers believe the fairies get very, very angry if they are disturbed. So you will see them alone in a field like this.

it's as if the roots are the crown of the tree. Regarding fairies, if they do live there you certainly wouldn't want to be disturbing them!
