Oh adorable. My first two yorkies that I had from puppies loved their toys, but when I got my rescues, Max and Charlie, they didn't know how to play with toys - their entire lives up until that point had been pure survival.
@narayani Yes they did. Tug, my oldest Yorkie, taught them that the greatest fun was to be had in the swimming pool. I helped a little by holding them up around their tummies while they became confident paddling around, and then they became like little otters - especially Charlie, who used to just leap into the pool randomly to fetch a leaf floating on the surface and bring it back, or to just swim around. What they liked best of all was chasing a stream of water coming out of the hosepipe. They would dash around the lawn chasing the water and the very best was a combination of the pool and water coming out of the hose when they would swim up and down chasing the stream of water as I walked up and down the side of the pool with the hosepipe. The hosepipe and water also came from Tug. He taught them how much fun that was, although Tug's 2nd best was a piece of rope to tug on. Max and Charlie both started tugging on a rope as well, but never with the enthusiasm Tug had for his rope. And they never learned to love Holly's soft squeaky toys.
Tootsie hated squeaky toys!! She would run away terrified if another dog had one while we were out walking.
Neither she nor Max were/are swimmers either which was disappointing. My previous dog, Dillon, loved the water (but not out of a hose)
