The Harris Hawk is a south American bird. It was bought to the UK in the 1960's for the purpose of falconry and has very quickly become highly favoured in the falconry community. It is a phenomenal hunter.

@catsmeowb - better than that. There are over 140 breeding pairs in Buckinghamshire. There are at least three other introduction sites in the the UK with a simular success. Across Europe there are now more than 20,000 breeding pairs. The programme has been a spectacular success!
@netkonnexion that is awesome. in the united states, they have done similar with wolves and other endangered species. wolves are now being complained about as they are taking livestock but eagles have returned, thankfully. I believe ranchers are now using llamas to protect their stock against the wolves.
What a proud looking beauty!! I'm glad that they are now on their way back to those higher numbers. Your clarity is something else on this photo and the colors, as well. Great shot!
The "teacher" in you pairs nicely with your photographic ability! To learn about this beautiful bird elevates the time I took to look at your work. Such good news for this bird and the people who enjoy watching them!
This is such a fabulous close up of him! Portrait is right...I'm so glad to hear about the success of the repopulation efforts...it would be such a shame to lose these beauties.
Wonderful capture.
