The dreaded selfie. I nearly stood it up but I've done 5 days of the ONS challenge. So here it is. I have slowly been accepting I really am not 21 anymore. Neither am I in my twenties. The things that make me realise this are 1) The doctors look younger than me. 2) Sometimes it looks like children are driving cars. Last week though I fully accepted approaching middle age. Littlest & I were watching some nursery rhymes together on you tube. There was an advert we couldn't skip so we watched it. It was for oil of olay. The voice suddenly sounded familiar but the face looked like that of a middle aged lady. A beautiful one at that but not one of a younger lady. Suddenly I realised who it was. It was joey potter from Dawsons Creek. A TV programme I loved in my late teenage/early twenties. The actress Katie Holmes is my age. I suddenly felt old. I was the target market for oil of olay.
@graemestevens I had a sneak preview into what it must feel like to be you doing weird selfies.... It's abit odd wrapping yourself up in paper with sellotape...
Oh wait until you get in your sixties. The waitresses and the people at fast food drive thrus call you "sweetie, and dearie." UGH I want to slap them. You had great fun with this selfie. Go girl!
Oh yes this is brilliant....a fave from me too! Well all I can say is you look like you are sixteen! Great shape you're in for what you call an oldie! I expect you had a great laugh doing this...I hope you had the curtains closed!
@happypat oh yes they were closed!! I have to say when I started this project I never imagined the day I'd be sellotaping newspapers to myself for a photograph!
Fav!! I like this one much more than the color version. Middle age, ha, from the bits I can see you look barely older than my grand kids. (well, that might be a stretch, but not by much). :-)
What a great selfie. Reminds me of a fancy dress party my daughter went to when she was a child. We dressed her up in a flapper dress made of newspaper, she had a crown made of newspaper too and a newspaper tree as a wand. She wore a sash saying "Miss Print". She got second prize and was so excited. She was only 7 years old at the time, so a long time ago.
First. Awesome shot. Second. If Katie Holmes is your age, well, shush up, you're a baby. Haha. I'm turning 50 in a couple of months... but this is my absolute fav of ons shots for its creativity and execution. This shows time and thought, for which I have a great appreciation
Brilliant awesome wonderful -- not enough words to convey how good I think this is. A great b&w, great concept, great execution! And you're young from my POV!
Super capture for page 3, you're going to make the news with this composition and hopefully a nice young man will ask to do the crossword. FAV from me.
@darylo I'm slightly shocked by the response of me wrapped up in newspaper.... Perhaps I'll try the look for the school run in the morning. No wait it's November I'll freeze!
@darylo oh and that you think it's that good is a real compliment. I know you've had your work up in competitions and printed. I'm debating joining a society next year....maybe.....just don't feel good enough at all!
@taffy thanks Taffy..... Next academic year when littlest out more at pre school I am seriously considering pushing myself to join a group as I'd have more time to give to it. Thanks for saying my work is strong, huge compliment coming from you.
@newbank It's been so much fun to see how our mentoring group members are now placing or winning themes/challenges, and essentially posting all around high quality shots. It's all you and your skills, but I secretly (to myself only) claim credit every time I see one of your major successes!! Just like I do with my university students -- very rewarding!
@taffy you deserve a bit of credit. It was people like you and @seanoneill whose work I first found on here that inspired me when I was new to photography that if I kept trying I could get better at it. I looked at images on here for about 3 months before taking the plunge to do one myself. So glad I did, I doubt I would have progressed much without this site. Crazy to think less than a year ago I had not a clue, not a single clue. I remember sitting in the first evening of the short course I did in the new year and the tutor taking about ISO, aperture and shutter speeds and I came home going "help, I don't have a clue!!" I (secretly to myself & hubby) am proud of myself and what I have achieved this year. So thank you for being a part of that journey for me.
I agree with Daryl. Print it! Use a lab if you don't have the means at home. I use Palm Laboratory in Birmingham - they are good with b&w use good quality paper and are not expensive, but I'm sure there are others.
So I wanted to congratulate you on an amazing first selfie. You way rocked it. It took me awhile to get good at them...here is my first and I did it very early on my first year: http://365project.org/amandal/365/2012-01-27 . Anyway, really love your idea, processing and take on it. I did a wrapping paper selfie to end my first year and then regretted it because of the connotations. It was fun and a good ending, though, but I had to hide it eventually to get less comments on it. Here that one is: http://365project.org/amandal/365/2012-12-31
Oh to be Katie Holmes' age again! I think this is wonderful. Age is all relative isn't it, you will look back one day and realise how young you were here. Please don't say you're middle aged unless you intend leaving this earth far too young.
fab selfie. With no aging there would be no life-so we all have to find a way to accept it. And you have an incredible figure-I thought that you had used a teenager!!! glad to see this image made the TT.
