Blood Moon by nickspicsnz

Blood Moon

Luckily the sky was clear when I first went out on my deck to take some shots of the blood moon (lunar eclipse).

A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon moves into the shadow cast from the sun shining on the earth. It is often referred to as a "blood moon" because the moon projects a red or orange appearance due to the sunlight passing through the Earth's atmosphere, which filters out most of its blue light. (Info taken from TVNZ web site).

The photo was actually taken in the early hours of Sunday 5 April but it still felt like the 4th because I hadn't been to bed, so I posted it for that date.
Nice work. All of my blood moon shots were rubbish so I had to settle for a half eclipse shot. :) Great detail...

Awesome... fav.
Lucky you, I took my camera into work tonight in the hope of getting a shot, but no luck.... way too much cloud. Now I have to wait another 3 years.

How interesting it is to me, Nick, that, as Ken and I stood out in a neighbour's yard (to block the glare of the street light) at 4 AM, I was sure you were getting your photo and Richard @chard as well. Can't guess about any others, but I knew you two would do it!

Yours is a lovely image, and I'm wondering if, even on a tripod, if you have trouble getting the moon centered, or we're you trying for "artistic placement". (I was "trying" to just keep the moon on my focal screen! Not as easy as it looks!) Beautifully accomplished, and glad to see you already made it to the Trending Page!

@deborah63 I was lucky that it was clear for a shot while. But I was also pleased with some of the shots I got when it clouded over because the cloud wasn't too thick. Is it three years until the next one - that's a long time :(

@Weezilou Thank you for commenting. I had my focus on single point in the centre so the moon was in the centre when I look the photos. But when I cropped it I put the moon was on the left hand side just because that was how I liked it really, and also the way the moon was shaded seemed to lend itself to being on the left hand side rather than the centre or the right. And there were a few more stars in that part of the photo than the others which I liked.
(Btw, from your comment I wonder if you've maybe confused me with another Nick?)

Wonderful capture! Where in NZ are you? I thought I'd be able to get some shots here in Christchurch as it was clear until about 11.30 and then the clouds got thicker and thicker and there was nothing to see. :(

@dide @olivetreeann Thanks very much.

@barb_b That's a shame that it was cloudy where you were. We're about halfway between Hamilton and Auckland just off SH1. The sky was clear when I went out at about 12.50. I was outside for an hour or so on and off (I went in to make a cup of coffee at one point because I got a bit chilly!) and it gradually clouded over during that time.

@alisonp Thanks Alison.

I took a lot of photos on a lot of different settings and some worked well and some not so well but I couldn't tell you which was which off the top of my head. And I think I've now realised that on a different day different settings would be needed anyway so I'd just have to play it by ear on the day.

Lovely capture. I've never had much luck pointing my camera away from our world.
